Geneseo equestrian begins season with first place finish at home show, hosts again this coming weekend

The Geneseo Equestrian team began their season this past weekend with back-to-back home shows where they competed against nine different teams. This year is the 15th anniversary of the varsity team and they started it well by winning their first show of the season on Saturday Oct. 26, followed by a sixth-place finish on Sunday Oct. 27.

Geneseo Family Restaurant is a staple of being a Geneseo student. It is located on Main St. and is a popular destination for weekend brunch. The only competition GFR truly has in the area are Mae’s Diner and Denny’s, but students flock to GFR on the weekend due to their unbeatable prices.

Bias in journalism is inevitable, allows suppressed voices to be heard

One of the first things people are told when they start writing in a journalistic form is to be careful that they’re not “biased.” Obviously, this does not apply to things like opinion editorials or entertainment reviews, but in every other aspect of journalistic writing, this is beat into the writer. If one writes with “bias,” then they are a sensationalist, a yellow journalist and an untrustworthy source.

Donat De La Cruz embodies everything an activist should. He is peaceful and works to help people beyond just helping himself. In his time at Geneseo, he has enjoyed meeting “a lot of brave individuals” on campus. With his activism work and unrelenting attitude toward improving his surroundings, many would even consider De La Cruz to be one of those brave individuals himself.

Fighting Against Racial Injustice (F.A.R.I.) hosts documentary series, inspires discussion

In April 2019, a series of Snapchats were posted to a Geneseo student’s Snapchat story of a pair of students in charcoal face masks with the caption “blackface and sunsets with my bae.”  This sparked activism for students of color throughout the campus, with activist organizations still pushing for change this semester. One of these organizations, Fighting Against Racial Injustice is hosting a documentary series discussing whether or not the racial climate at Geneseo has changed in the past decade.

New York Times coverage of U.S. Open tennis match was insensitive, sexist

In the third round of the U.S. Open, there was an eye-catching match up. Naomi Osaka, the winner of the U.S. Open last year who beat Serena Williams after Williams had a conflict with the umpire, was to play Coco Guaff, the sport’s 15-year-old prodigy who gained a following after she beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon. All eyes were on this match.

New York finalized the state budget at the end of March and according to an email sent by President Denise Battles on April 15, “direct tax support to state-operated campuses was accelerated by $109.5 million in one-time monies, with no impact on future funding.”

Students respond with disappointment following back-to-back bias-related incidents in Niagara Hall

Niagara Hall has been the site of several bias-related incidents in past weeks. Sometime between Feb. 9 and 10, a Black History Month drawing on a whiteboard was erased through. The board clearly said, “do not erase” and was designed by one of the resident assistants in Niagara Hall.

Track trends upward as SUNYACs approach

Geneseo track and field’s season is beginning to pick up, with just one meet left before conference championships and the team goes to regionals and nationals. The team has experienced success so far, with the Geneseo boys ranked 19th and girls ranked 7th in the nation for Division III track and field, according to US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Two Geneseo rugby players earn national recognition

The Geneseo Rugby Football club, also known as the Warthogs, fielded 11 members to the 15-member New York State All-Conference team for DII Club Rugby last month, along with two players who received spots within the top 200 players in the nation.
