Intramural Corner: Floor hockey recap

In our final installment of intramural champions from last semester, we will rehash the floor hockey championships.

Top-seeded FC Merly won the men's division, giving them another championship in addition to their title in men's broomball. They knocked off #4 Willis in the semifinals and defeated #2 Slamhog Wombats, semifinal victors over #3 Hardly Boys, in the championship.

Two keys to FC Merly's success were seniors Mitch Stephens and Kris Heeres, according to junior captain Pat Occhiuto. "Heeres was a great new addition who scored a lot of big goals in the playoffs," said Occhiuto.

FC Merly successfully defended last season's floor hockey championship this season and will look to do the same next year.

The women's division was won by #2 Marco's Women, who defeated the top-seeded Master Gators in the title game.

The second-ranked Master Gators co-ed team did what the women's team could not, beating #1 Captain Insanity in the championship game to add another intramural championship to their trophy case.

Juniors Mike Robertson and Al Dilluvio were added to the roster and proved to be crucial to the success of the Master Gators. "Floor hockey was exhausting, so the more subs we had the better," said junior captain Pete Bertucci.

Goalie Rob Cook was also key for the Master Gators, playing a stellar championship game to keep the game tied at zero. "We got a lucky bounce with under 10 seconds left for the only goal of the game by Robertson," said Bertucci. "It was nice to win floor hockey after getting killed in the finals last year."

Their chances to repeat next season will be thwarted by the fact that the team is mostly seniors. But they can be proud that they went out on top, at least in floor hockey.
