Sprinkler break floods Sturges

On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 1:45 p.m., Sturges Hall was evacuated due to flooding on the second floor.

According to University Police, a sprinkler head froze above the south end of the building. The sprinkler burst, saturating the insulation in room 208A which caused the ceiling to collapse. The collapsed ceiling set off the rest of the sprinkler system and the fire alarm. The building was evacuated, and University Police were called in along with the local fire department. The building remained closed for the rest of the day.

According to sources, administrators canceled some late afternoon graduate classes in the department of communicative disorders and sciences. Some sociology classes were moved temporarily as well.

On Wednesday afternoon, maintenance workers were at work cleaning up the damage, but calls to the department were not returned. The complete extent of the damage could not be determined at press time.
