Syracuse enduring up-and-down season

The Syracuse men's basketball team has struggled to maintain consistency all season, and that struggle has been on display lately. The Orange picked up a win last Saturday against a visiting, and equally struggling Depaul team. The victory halted a three-game losing streak which sent the team plummeting down the Big East standings. Syracuse started the conference season strong, winning four of the first five contests, and appeared to have found a rhythm before dropping three in a row.

The up and down season comes as a surprise for a team featuring seven seniors. One senior, guard Demetris Nichols, has produced more than expected, leading the team with over 18 points-per-game. His exploits have not been enough, however, to offset the surprisingly poor play of sophomore guard Eric Devendorf, who was expected to improve beyond his current 13 points per game average. Freshman forward Paul Harris has also disappointed, scoring only eight points per game in limited action.

After Monday's 67-60 loss to Connecticut, the Orange will look to turn things around as Big East play continues with games against St. John's and South Florida on the horizon.
