On Saturday, March 31 the Geneseo's outdoor track teams traveled to Ithaca for a non-scoring meet against several central New York colleges. They included SUNY Cortland and Hamilton College. The Knights did well, with several high finishes on both squads.
For the men's team seniors Chris Popovici and Ross Hunkovic crossed first in the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters with times of 1:57.37 and 3:55.93 respectively. Popovici came away with the victory with less than a second between him and the second place finisher.
Fellow senior Joe Goodspeed had an outstanding meet, finishing in the top three for three events. Goodspeed won the long jump with a distance of 6.36 meters, finished second in the high jump with a leap of 1.95 meters and placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 12.71 meters. Goodspeed was beaten by freshman Ryan Joyce in the triple jump, who placed second with a distance of 12.90 meters. In addition, sophomore Pete Beuler was second in the 10,000 meters in 34:58.54. Sophomore Jon Gauthier finished second in the 5,000 meter race with a time of 16:02.75.
The women's squad had a strong showing with junior Amanda Haney highlighting the meet by winning the high jump with a NCAA provisional height of 1.69 meters. Haney also finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.72 seconds.
Sophomore Mary McGrath took first place in the 10,000 meter race with a time of 38:53.89. Sophomore Meg Anderson won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.84. Geneseo's Julie Thering had a strong showing with a second place in the shot put with a toss of 11.54 meters. In the 5,000 meter race, the women's squad captured second through fifth place with freshman Sandra Goettelman leading the way, finishing in 18:41.06. Geneseo's track squads compete again this Saturday, April 7 in Rochester.
