Women's lacrosse suffers first loss at St. John Fisher

The Geneseo women's lacrosse team was just over a minute away from extending their season-opening winning streak to four games, holding an 11-10 lead against St. John Fisher on Tuesday. But Lauren Glavin's second goal of the game for the Cardinals with nine seconds left tied the score at 11 and sent the game into overtime, where Fisher scored twice and picked up a 13-12 victory.

Sophomore midfielder Maggie Morris led the way for Geneseo with five goals and an assist, including three goals in the first half. The third put the Lady Knights up 7-2 with 8:09 left in the first half. However, St. John Fisher clamped down defensively and shut out Geneseo for the rest of the half, scoring four goals of their own to cut the lead to 7-6 at halftime.

Geneseo scored the first two goals of the second half to go up by three, 9-6. St. John Fisher answered with four of the next five goals, tying the game at 10. Morris' fifth and final goal of the game put the Lady Knights up 11-10 with 1:09 to play, setting the stage for Glavin's heroics to send the game into overtime.

St. John Fisher struck first in the opening overtime period and opened up a two-goal lead with 2:20 left in the second overtime, 13-11. Senior midfielder Maggie Benham scored just 34 seconds later to bring Geneseo back to within a goal, but the Lady Knights went scoreless in the final 1:46 and the Cardinals held on for the victory.

Morris' six points were tops on the Geneseo side, while Benham added four on two goals and two assists. Senior attacker Emily Ward also pitched in two goals of her own, while senior attacker Quinn Harvey and junior midfielders Colleen Byrne and Shauna Leonard all added one goal each. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah McKee made 18 saves in net on 42 shots for Geneseo.

The loss drops the Lady Knights to 3-1 on the young season. Geneseo hosts St. Lawrence on Thursday, April 5 at 4:30 p.m. in their final non-conference tune-up before SUNYAC play begins. The Lady Knights open up their conference schedule at home against Oswego on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
