Intramural Corner

On Friday, April 6, the Geneseo Athletic Department and Best of Western New York sponsored an off-campus trip to an AHL hockey game between the Rochester Americans and the Hamilton Bulldogs. During the first intermission, last season's co-ed competitive broomball champions, The Legend of Sean Jones, faced off against the co-ed broomball champions from SUNY Brockport.

Each team brought one referee and the teams played a full-ice game for four minutes during the intermission, with the score ending in 0-0 tie. Scoring opportunities were limited outside of a Brockport breakaway that was thwarted by Geneseo junior Derek Jokic. Geneseo was in the midst of a line change when Jokic recognized the breakaway on his way to the bench. Jokic changed direction and slid in front of the Geneseo goal to stop the Brockport opportunity and keep the game scoreless.

The opportunity for this game came when an Amerks representative contacted intramural coordinator Brooks Hawley about bringing teams to play during the first intermission. Hawley thought it would be a better idea to get another school involved as well and called Brockport, who agreed to the game. Geneseo's pep band was also present at the game in support of the team.

"It was nice with the pep band there," said Hawley. "It gave us more support than Brockport, who just had their team."

Hawley was also able to find old uniforms for the team to wear, with the women wearing old soccer jerseys and the men wearing old hockey jerseys. According to Hawley, this game will be an annual occurrence for Geneseo's broomball champions and an exciting opportunity to extend their season.

"It gives people one more reason to play intramurals," said Hawley. "You get to play off-campus in front of a different crowd in a different stadium. Everybody had a great time, since nobody had ever played broomball outside of Geneseo."
