Women's softball plays ten games in busy week, bumps SUNYAC record to 11-9

The women's softball team has had a hectic week. In an effort to make up some games that were rescheduled earlier this month, the team has played in five doubleheaders since last Thursday.

Geneseo hosted Cortland last Thursday and came away with two losses, 8-4 and 5-3. In the first game, Sophomore Kerry Kuhn gave up eight runs but struck out five batters. Geneseo's offense was productive with nine hits, including a home run from junior Kristen Newton. Newton was 2-4 that day, scoring another run later in the game. Freshman Jackie Davey also went 2-4, and senior Audrey Kuhn was 2-3 with two RBIs late in the game, but the late rally was not enough to give Geneseo the win.

In the second game of the day, sophomore Lindsay Norton took the mound and took a loss, allowing three runs. Cortland scored two more unearned runs off of Geneseo errors and a fielder's choice in the third inning. Sophomore Liz Squairs was 1-3 with two RBIs in the game.

The team played much better on Friday, beating SUNYIT 8-0 and 10-0. Kerry Kuhn struck out five and didn't give up any runs in five innings. Kuhn helped her own cause by going 2-3 at the plate and driving in two runs. Newton was 2-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, and senior Christina Marinucci was 2-3 with a run scored. Norton was lights out in the second game, recording five strikeouts and allowing only two hits. Senior Melissa Mason went 2-2 with two runs scored, sophomore Nicole Steger went 2-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Newton was 2-2 with three RBIs and a run scored, and Squairs was 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Overall, Geneseo jumped all over SUNYIT's pitchers, recording twelve hits and scoring ten runs in five innings.

Things didn't go quite as well for the team on Sunday, as Geneseo fell to Plattsburgh in both games, 5-1 and 9-1. Kerry Kuhn took the hill in the first game, allowing nine hits and five runs. The offensive power from the SUNYIT game was nowhere to be found as Geneseo managed only two hits and one run in 23 at bats. The sole run was scored by Kerry Kuhn, who had one of the two hits. Norton didn't have her best stuff in the second game as she allowed five runs and failed to strike out anyone. Plattsburgh also scored four runs off of two Geneseo errors. Geneseo was again deficient at the plate, recording only four hits in 19 at bats. Squairs was 2-2 in the game, driving in the team's only run. Davie and Kerry Kuhn had the other two hits for the team.

Geneseo bounced back nicely from the bad day, beating Potsdam 8-0 and 10-2 on Monday. Kerry Kuhn was on fire in the first game, allowing only one hit and striking out five batters. Steger was 1-1 with two runs and an RBI in the second. Squairs was 1-2 with two RBIs and a run scored, Kerry Kuhn was 1-1 at the plate with two walks, and Davey was 1-2 with an RBI and a run. Sophomore Christina Gephardt was 1-2, adding a run and an RBI, and sophomore Sara Weisenborn was 1-1 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.

Norton took the mound in the second game and allowed only three hits in five innings. Freshman Kristin Carroza pitched in the final inning, recording one strikeout. Potsdam scored twice in the game, but both runs were unearned. Newton was 3-3 in the game, with two runs and two RBIs. Kerry Kuhn was 2-3 with a run and an RBI, while Marinucci was 1-2 with a run scored. Norton helped her own cause by scoring twice, and Weisenborn was 1-2 with a run and an RBI. Pinch hitting for Weisenborn, freshman Sam Chin was 1-2 with a run scored.

On Tuesday, Geneseo split their doubleheader with Oswego, losing 5-4 in the first game and winning 10-1 in the second. On the mound for the first game, Kerry Kuhn struck out seven but allowed eight hits. Gephardt went deep with a solo shot in the third and Steger hit a two-run homer in the fifth to bring the score to 3-1. Gephardt hit an RBI single in the eighth, but Geneseo still came up a run short. In the second game, Norton notched five strikeouts and allowed only three hits for the win. Newton hit a two-run double in the third inning, followed by a two-run homer from Squairs. Newton later hit her own two-run homer and freshman Katie Holm blasted a solo shot in the sixth. After this frantic week, Geneseo is now 14-16 overall and 11-9 in the SUNYAC.
