Blue Wave performs well in Long Island

This past weekend, the Geneseo men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Long Island for the ECAC championships. Both squads turned in solid performances, with the women placing second and the men finishing fifth.

"We had some outstanding performances this weekend. The team really exceeded my expectations," said Coach Paul Dotterweich.

The women finished with a final score of 535.5, trailing NYU's final score of 641.5.

"The whole women's team was performing at a high level," said Dotterweich.

Leading the way for the Blue Wave was freshman Jennifer Anthone. The first-year swimmer finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.77 seconds, fifth in the 100 free (54.76) and fourth in the 200 free (1:58.54).

"Jen swam real well," Dotterweich said. "She had some good races across the board."

Junior Jessie Cocco turned in strong performances with a second-place finish in the 100 breast (1:08.12) and a fourth-place finish in the 200 breast (2:29.68). Cocco and Anthone teamed with freshman Katie Linehan and sophomore Michelle Rodriguez in the 400 free relay to capture the squad's only win. "The 400 relay was the highlight of the weekend," Dotterweich said. "They set a new school record,"

Anthone also teamed with senior Maren MacDonald, Linehan and Rodriguez to finish second in the 200 free relay (1:39.62), as well as with Rodriguez, Linehan and junior Lindsay Dressel in the 200 medley relay where they finished fourth (1:53.51). Dressel also finished third in the 400 individual medley (4:40.56) and fourth in the 200 fly (2:15.26).

Other strong performances included sophomore Sierra Achin placing second in the 200 breast (2:28.12), Linehan finishing third in the 50 free (24.81) and Rodriguez finishing third in the 200 free (1:58.54).

The men's squad finished fifth with a final score of 302.5. They were lead by junior Charlie Hake who captured the 50 free in a time of 21.25 seconds. Senior John Zolna finished fourth in the same event in a time of 21.42. Hake and Zolna then teamed with juniors Sig Culhane and Clint Sugnet in the 200 free and 400 free relays where they finished second and third respectively. Freshman Russell Sullivan also helped the cause with his fifth place finish in the 200 back (1:59.90)

Both squads will soon head down to Florida and begin preparation for the second half of their season when they return for the second semester.
