Records fall in Blue Wave's win

The Geneseo men's and women's swim teams continued their season-long perfection by beating Oswego last Saturday, closing out their dual-meet season with unblemished records.

Four pool records fell in the men's and women's meets, as well as one Geneseo record. This made for an exciting finish going into the end of the season.

The men beat Oswego by a total score of 166-124, extending their dual meet unbeaten streak to 20. Senior Charlie Harke set a pool record in the 50 free with an astonishing time of 21.44 seconds, earning him Geneseo Athlete of the Week honors. Freshman Russell Sullivan was a double winner, as he took home firsts in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Sullivan was also part of the wining 400-medley relay. Other individual winners for Geneseo included junior Sig Culhane, sophomore Matt Valvo, senior Chris Norton, freshman Andrew Gorcica, senior John Zolna and sophomore Mike Klemens.

The women won by an impressive score of 167-125 as they smashed four records of their own.

The 400 medley relay team broke the pool record with a time of 4:04.44. The squad included sophomore Natalie Thorpe, junior Jessie Cocco and freshmen Daina Bouquin and Michelle Rodriguez. Junior Lindsey Dressel was also phenomenal, breaking pool records in the 200 fly and 400 IM. Joining Dressel as double winners were Rodriguez, sophomore Sierra Achin, and Jennifer Anthone. Bouquin also set a school record in the 100 fly with a time of 59.97 to close out the historic day.

Head coach Paul Dotterweich has been very pleased by his team's performance over the season and was not surprised by Saturday's dominance. He mentioned how he expects such performance from such a talented team and expressed special gratitude toward the freshman class, especially the women.

"The women's team is very young," said Dotterweich. "The freshmen have been key in our success this year."

Going into next week's SUNYAC championship, Dotterweich was calm and confident in the team's preparation, saying things are going smoothly and according to plan.

"We are just going to do the same thing we do every year," he said. "We're tapering down and resting up so we have the best chance of wining."

Both teams end their regular season with an undefeated 9-0 dual meet record and look to take the SUNYAC title Feb. 7-9 at Erie Community College.
