Men's hoops takes 2; women manage split

The men's and women's basketball teams took to the road last weekend, competing against the Buffalo State Bengals and Fredonia Blue Devils. The men swept their West division rivals, while the women went 1-1.

The men played a tight game on Friday against Buffalo State, coming away with a 75-73 victory. They were led by a Herculean effort from junior guard Scott Morton, who scored a career-high 39 points on 15-of-20 shooting.

"He shot the ball very well from behind the three-point line," said coach Steve Minton.

The Knights put on an encore performance at Fredonia on Saturday, dispatching the Blue Devils by a final score of 64-53.

Morton and junior forward Jeff Howe paced the Knights' offense, which shot 55 percent from the field. Morton scored a team-high 17 points, and Howe shot 7-of-8 from the floor en route to a 16-point, seven-rebound performance.

The women's team headed into Friday's game at Buffalo State having won their last five games, but couldn't get anything going in a 68-54 defeat.

The Knights shot an anemic 34 percent from the floor, while allowing the Bengals to shoot 47 percent for the game.

"It was a little bit disappointing…We didn't move our feet defensively, which resulted in a lot of reach-ins and easy points," said coach Scott Hemer.

Junior guard Amanda Bihr scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the loss.

Against Fredonia, the women came out flat again, playing to a 30-30 tie at halftime and turning the ball over 15 times in the first half.

However, the Knights found their groove during the break and exploded for 45 points in the second half, blowing away the Blue Devils by a final score of 75-63. Even more impressive is the fact that the Knights had just two turnovers in the entire second half.

Senior forward Annie Verdino notched a double-double to lead the rejuvenated offense, collecting 11 rebounds to go with her team-high 18 points.
