Women's lax wins three

The women's lacrosse team continued their excellent performance, gaining ground in the SUNYACs with recent decisive victories over St. John Fisher, Oswego and Potsdam.

Last Thursday, April 17, the Lady Knights hosted the St. John Fisher Cardinals in their only home game of the week. After trailing 4-2 after the first half, Geneseo went on three separate scoring runs, including three goals in three minutes in the second half on their way to a 15-10 win. Junior Hannah McKee stopped 10 shots in the home victory.

On Saturday, April 19, the Blue Knights traveled to Oswego for a SUNYAC matchup against a struggling Lakers team that had lost three of the past four contests. A win for the Lakers would have closed the gap between the two teams in the SUNYAC standings, but the firepower of the Geneseo offense prevailed.

Geneseo outscored Oswego in the first half with five tallies by senior Shauna Leonard, who later added another in the second half. After squandering a five-goal advantage, the Lady Knights went on another run in the second half, outscoring Oswego 7-1 on the way to a 15-7 win. Other scorers in the second half included junior Laura Kitts, who scored all three of her goals in the second, and junior Maggie Morris, who netted two of her three.

McKee made seven saves to post the win in net and held Oswego scoreless during the last 27:14, allowing Geneseo to advance to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in SUNYAC.

The team then traveled to Potsdam on Tuesday to face off against the Bears. The Blue Knights made quick work of the reeling Bears - who are only 1-5 in SUNYAC play - and jumped out to a 9-2 lead by the end of the first half on their way to a dominating 19-6 win.

Leonard was brilliant again, adding another five goals, which contributed to her earning the honor of SUNYAC women's lacrosse Player of the Week. The Knights also received two goals each from Kitts, Morris, sophomores Abby Hungerford and Tara Murphy and freshman Lauren Burgoon. McKee picked up the win in goal by making 10 saves and allowing two goals in 39 minutes.

The Lady Knights moved to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in SUNYAC and host Elmira on Thursday, April 24. u
