Women's soccer shuts out Keuka

After a rainy 2-0 win against the Keuka Storm on Saturday, the women's soccer team now boasts a 3-1 record.

Freshman Corinne Santariello assisted the first goal of the game, scored 25 minutes into the first half by junior forward Stephanie Bergin. The second goal wasn't scored until the last 10 minutes of the game, when junior Melissa Beale from 18 yards out assisted Santariello.

The Knights took many shots on goal throughout both halves, holding a commanding 22-1 shot advantage while keeping the ball in the offensive end for the majority of the game.

Geneseo coach Nate Wiley and members of the sidelines became rowdy as unfavorable calls were made, or in some cases because there was no whistle at all. Three yellow cards were given to Keuka players.

At Saturday's game, Geneseo put the pressure on the Storm's goalie whose job was especially challenging because of the rain. A slippery ball and a slick field made for a few injuries and a lot of sliding. Wiley said that the conditions caused him to worry about injuries that had already been attained during the preseason.

Overall, Wiley said that he was happy with the women's performance and thought that the beginning of the season was looking good. "We just have to figure out how to put them away," he said, adding that the team has good control of the ball. He said that although the team is young and has a lot of learning to do, they all enjoy playing despite the hard work.

The Lady Knights haven't been to the National Tournament in 14 years, but it remains their ultimate goal. They have a good chance to make it into SUNYAC championships should they continue playing as well as on Saturday. The Knights next challenge, outside of the SUNYAC division, will be Thursday versus Nazareth.
