Every year, a national honor society inducts about 3 percent of the Greek population in order to recognize the contributions they have made to organizations and campuses.
The National Order of Omega was founded in 1959 by a group of fraternity members from the University of Miami who believed in recognition for Greeks who deserve it. NOO's goal is to promote the values of leadership and scholarship not only among its members, but also among Greeks on campuses nationwide.
By identifying leaders in the Greek community, NOO helps to create positive role models who symbolize the core values embraced by Greeks. Since the Nu Alpha chapter in Geneseo was founded in 1993, over 400 Greeks have been inducted into the organization.
NOO gave out more than $55,000 in scholarships last year alone. These scholarships are often granted to candidates who plan to complete advanced degrees in school administration. Most of the recipients eventually take on active roles on campuses across the country.
Over the years, Geneseo has had a number of scholarship winners, all of whom have been leaders in the Greek community.
One of NOO's goals is to bring together leaders in the Greek community in an effort to share knowledge about different community service events and programs that have been successful on different campuses. In doing so, NOO ensures that their values and ideals will live on for years to come.
Members of NOO must demonstrate that they have made significant contributions to their campus and maintain a GPA higher than the all-Greek average. NOO hopes that by giving students positive role models, everyone in the Greek community will benefit. u
