Heading into last Friday's SUNYAC Tournament at the National Soccer Hall of Fame Fields in Oneonta, NY, both the men's and women's soccer teams had hopes of a conference championship. Unfortunately, both teams had their hopes dashed in dramatic fashion by Red Dragons.
The men sauntered into Oneonta as the number one overall seed after compiling an undefeated record in the SUNYAC regular season. The fifth-seeded Cortland Red Dragons were ready for the challenge, however, and battled the Knights to a 0-0 standstill at the end of regulation. A pair of 10-minute sudden-death overtime periods also proved fruitless for either side, leading to a decisive round of penalty kicks. Cortland slipped past the Knights on kicks, 6-5, sealing the upset and ending Geneseo's season at 11-4-3.
The women's team fell in similar fashion against the number-one seeded Oneonta Red Dragons. Exiting halftime with a 1-0 deficit, the Lady Knights tied it up when freshman midfielder Bella Masotti scored an unassisted goal in the 79th minute. Geneseo appeared primed to pull off the upset until Oneonta freshman Alicia Vollmer scored the first goal of her career with just 1:58 remaining. The Lady Knights were unable to come back, falling 2-1 to end their season. Geneseo finishes the year with an 11-7-4 record.
