The Bank Street Bagel Cafe, on the corner of Main and Bank Streets, is a cozy place to grab a bite to eat while enjoying time with friends or a good read.
The cafe has been a Main Street fixture for about eight years, but the current owners Mike and Danielle Adams bought the store when it was put up for sale about two years ago.
"My husband is a trained chef and we live in Livonia," said Danielle. "We happened to see that this was for sale and we were looking for something close so we bought it."
Since procuring the cafe, the couple has undertaken renovations of the kitchen and back dining room, which they rent out to organizations for catered events. They also have several new features including a salad and wrap bar, which they plan on installing within the month.
Open from 7:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., the Bank Street Cafe serves breakfast and lunch. Bagels are baked fresh on site every morning. One of the cafe's most popular items on the menu is the "early riser," which consists of egg, cheese and a choice of sausage, bacon or ham on a fresh bagel.
Juniors Nate Gworek and Brian Hartle and senior Noah Dreiblatt all collectively described the early riser as "awesome," and noted that they prefer bacon on theirs.
The food, as well as a connection to the staff, draws students to the Cafe. "It's delicious and I have friends who work here," said Hartle.
According to the Adams, early mornings and lunchtime tend to be the busiest times of the day, though even during a lull there were several people munching, chatting, and reading in booths.
"I come here all the time," said junior Emily Froome.
The couple's plans do not stop at breakfast and lunch.
Beginning this weekend, Bank Street Café will be open for late night delivery from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. They deliver burgers, quesadillas, wraps and their version of a garbage plate, "late night plates," on campus and within a mile of the cafe.
"We tried late night delivery during the last few months of this past spring semester and it was very successful, so we hope this will be very popular," said Danielle.
Mike also hopes to introduce home-style dinners to the cafe's menu.
"My husband is trained in fine dining, and there isn't a lot of home-style dining offered on Main Street," said Danielle. "He's hoping to get into things like pasta or Mexican nights."
With its great quality and variety of food on the menu, the Bank Street Bagel Café provides a friendly and warm atmosphere to enjoy some food or socialize.
One customer, Mary Merner-Moore, who lives just outside the village, said that she has noticed a group of regulars.
"I've seen a group of retired gentlemen here often in the mornings," she said. "It's great that this provides a place for them to socialize and start their days. It doesn't just provide food, but a sense of community as well, which is key to quality of life in town."
