Women's basketball sunk by Lakers

Despite playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd on Nov. 2, the women's basketball team fell to the Oswego Lakers, 66-50, extended their losing streak to three games.

Previously, Geneseo had suffered losses to Juniata College, 88-49, and Wilmington College, 66-52. The team currently stands at 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC Conference.

Coach Scott Hemer said before the game that the team size disadvantage was a concern of his, along with the team's ability to rebound the ball well and be consistent from the free-throw line.

"We're too small not to work hard on the boards," said Hemer.

He also commented on how Geneseo was forced to play younger players more than he would like: "We've had two key injuries and some of our freshmen are seeing a lot more time than is normal at this level."

Unfortunately, while Geneseo did manage to out-rebound Oswego 43-39, the Lady Knights shot an underwhelming 13-29 from the free-throw line while Oswego was 16-23 for the game.

At the half Geneseo trailed 35-24, but the Lady Knights cut the Lakers' lead to 44-38 with 11:20 to play on a three-pointer by freshman Briana Dunton, who had seven total points the night. That was as close as the Lady Knights got, however, as Oswego scored the next 10 points to pull away for good.

Geneseo finished 28 percent from the floor for the game. In contrast, Oswego hit 40 percent of their shots, making 22 out of 55 attempts.

Freshman Katelyn Charbonneau came off the bench and scored a career-best eight points with five rebounds to pace the Geneseo attack. Sophomore Claire Howe and senior Tracy Wangelin each scored seven points.

After the game Howe said, "We just weren't able to keep up with them, they shot the ball really well and we didn't have our best night."

Senior Jamie Scordino hauled in a career-high eight rebounds in the loss. Three of Oswego's starters scored at least 12 points while none of Geneseo's starters managed to reach double digits.

Geneseo faces a two-game road trip against division rivals Potsdam and Plattsburgh this weekend.
