This weekend, Geneseo's Blue Wave and Lady Wave swim teams dominated the SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships held at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
The men entered a second decade of wins with an 11th straight championship title, while the women grabbed their second consecutive title.
Over the course of the three-day meet, Blue Wave combined for 20 SUNYAC records and 33 school records: 13 SUNYAC and 23 school records for the women; seven SUNYAC and 10 school records for the men.
Blue Wave's supremacy was never questioned, as both teams led throughout the course of the entire meet.
In perhaps the fastest SUNYAC meet ever, members of both the men's and women's teams dropped staggering times and earned multiple spots on the awards podium in the finals.
Additionally, by the meet's end, 11 women and seven men had achieved NCAA "B" standard qualifying times and two women earned "A" cuts, guaranteeing them a chance to compete at the NCAA Championships in March.
"Going into the meet I felt very confident that we had enough talent to get the job done," said head coach Paul Dotterweich. "The times that were put up by the swimmers far surpassed my expectations."
Senior men's captain Clint Sugnet, who met two NCAA "B" cuts, agreed. "Most knew we were easily going to come out on top, but it was how we were going to do it that was in question and the team far surpassed what I expected," he said. "I was truly honored to be a part of such a strong, competitive and respectful team. They rocked it."
"This year's SUNYACs were by far the best for me," said senior women's captain Lindsay Dressel, who earned four NCAA "B" cuts of her own. "We qualified more people for NCAAs than ever before, and the spirit and support of Blue Wave was the best it has ever been."
Blue Wave's wins look to continue, as strong freshman and sophomore involvement in both the men's and women's teams proved integral to the team's success.
"I am confident that both teams will continue to challenge for the top spot at SUNYACs in the future," said Dotterweich.
