Called "a good experience" by head coach Dave Prevosti, the Geneseo's indoor track teams competed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III championships at Tufts University in Medford, Mass.
The men's squad finished 22nd out of 49 scoring teams with 16 points over the two-day championship held last weekend. On Friday, junior Jesse Berube and sophomore Ryan O'Connor accounted for Geneseo's points, competing in the 5,000-meter race. Berube finished fourth with a time of 15:05.6 and O'Connor finished sixth in 15:11.25.
Sophomore Mark Streb highlighted the Saturday results by finishing second in the mile run with a time of 4:17.00. "Mark was definitely the highlight for us on the men's side," said Prevosti. "He was in the hunt the entire way."
The women's team did slightly better, placing 18th out of 51 scoring teams with 18 points. On Friday, senior Laura Iafrati finished fifth in the 5,000-meter in 17:53.64 and junior Sandra Goettelman finished just seven seconds behind her for sixth place.
The distance medley relay team gave a standout performance for the squad, finishing fifth in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 12:08.19. The relay team featured juniors Erin Marks and Kristin Shumway running the 1200- and 400-meter legs, and freshmen Alyssa Smith and Kelly Brunscheen running the 1600- and 800- meter legs.
On Saturday, senior Lisa Halloran finished sixth in the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:35.34. Marks once again scored points for Geneseo by placing sixth in the mile run with a time of 5:06.33. Marks was followed closely by Smith, who finished eighth in the same event in 5:10.49.
"[Marks] had a very good meet, with her mile time she moved up to 4th all-time in Geneseo history," said Prevosti of her performance.
No Geneseo athletes from the indoor track team will be heading to the NCAA championship meet. The teams enter their outdoor track season on March 28 at Ithaca College in a non-scoring meet.
