Track and field impress at Brockport, Cortland

On Saturday, the Geneseo track and field squads split up as the distance runners competed at the Cortland Classic and the rest of the team traveled to the Brockport Invitational.

In the Cortland non-scoring meet, senior Ryan Mulcahy and sophomore Ryan O'Connor placed first and second in the 10,000-meter race with times of 31 minutes, 25.20 seconds and 31:56.13. Senior Will Haskell claimed fourth in the 5,000-meters in 15:08.72 and junior Lee Gabler took fourth in the 1,500-meters in 4:01.27.

For the women's side, junior Danni Hunt won the 10,000-meter with a time of 37:31.13 and first year Alyssa Smith won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:14.15.

The rest of the squad traveled to Brockport, competing against several local schools including Alfred State and the University of Rochester. On the men's side, four athletes won their events: Senior Craig Harlacher won the 100-meters in 11.13 and the 200-meters in 22.74, sophomore Mark Streb won the 5,000-meters in 15:12.24, sophomore John Brotsch captured the 400-meters in 49.48 and sophomore Mike McManus took the high jump in 1.90 meters.

On the women's side, junior Kristin Shumway led the Knights' effort. Shumway placed second in the high jump with a height of 1.48 meters and fifth in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 27.79. Senior Julie Thering was second in the discus with a toss of 36.81 meters. Freshman Kelly Brunscheen placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 67.47.

This weekend Geneseo will host the Geneseo Open, the school's first track meet in over a decade. The meet will officially open the school's new track and will feature many area schools. The event kicks off with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday followed by the meet itself at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
