After clinching a spot in the SUNYAC tournament last week, the Geneseo women's softball team didn't show any signs of slowing down as they took four of their last six games to earn the tournament's No. 4 seed.
The Lady Knights began their series on Thursday by sweeping Oswego at home. They followed the streak with two consecutive splits on the road at Nazareth and Fredonia, ending their season with an overall record of 19-17 (13-7 in SUNYAC play).
In their first game against Oswego, the Lady Knights initially struggled at the plate, scattering only five hits. Geneseo eventually manufactured the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth inning, off of a two-out RBI single by junior Jackie Davey. The Lady Knights held on to the 1-0 lead and went on to win the game by the same score.
"We happened to get the one hit we needed," said head coach Tony Ciccarello. "Last week we didn't, but this week we got the hit when it counted."
Geneseo went on to annihilate the Lakers 10-2 in the nightcap as they exploded for six runs in the third inning.
On Friday, the Lady Knights traveled to Nazareth for their last non-conference match-up of the season. Despite resting a number of starters, they managed to come away with a win.
In the opener, junior Bree Crosett led the attack by going 3-4 with a double and two RBIs as the decisive five-run seventh inning was enough to hold off Nazareth, 7-5.
Saturday's doubleheader against Fredonia marked the end of the regular season for Geneseo. The Lady Knights stumbled in the first game, 4-3, before rebounding with an impressive 6-5 win in the second game.
Sophomore pitcher Janine Montera tossed a three-hit gem in game one, yet came away with the loss as Geneseo's defense committed seven errors - four in the fourth inning alone.
"We did anything we could do to lose that game," said Ciccarello. "From base-running mistakes to physical errors in the field … it wasn't pretty."
"It's just one of those things," he continued. "We outhit them and we out-errored [sic] them, we just didn't outscore them."
The Lady Knights now prepare for the SUNYAC tournament, beginning April 30 against Buffalo State in Cortland.
