The Geneseo women's field hockey team defeated visiting Morrisville by a score of 4-0 last Saturday and now sits at a perfect 3-0 in the SUNYAC division halfway through their season.
Freshman Chellie Johnson got the offense started when she scored off an assist by senior Libby LeRoy. Senior Jean Nolan scored from the top of the arc off a penalty corner by junior Michelle Milkovich at 38 minutes, 43 seconds.
The Mustangs defense stood fast against Geneseo for much of the game until 62:43 when junior Stephanie Maisonet tipped in a pass by junior Erin Zalewski to give the Knights a 3-0 lead. Senior Jean Danaher ensured Geneseo the win by converting a penalty stroke with less than four minutes remaining. Freshman goalie Nicole Zito made one save and was relieved by fellow freshman Caitlyn Dowell, who was untested in the final 3:39 of game time.
Head coach Jessica Seren credited the team's stifling defense for much of the win on Saturday and noted that the Knights only allowed Morrisville's leading scorer one shot the entire match. Seren said she believes that "defense generated attack," as the team scored four unanswered goals throughout the game.
The women now boast a 6-2 record and a 3-0 conference record as they prepare to take on SUNYAC powerhouse and nationally ranked Cortland on Friday at home. The Knights are on track to meet their season goal of 10 wins, breaking the Geneseo field hockey record for wins in a season, which was tied last year. Seren said that the team will keep "raising the bar" with their eye on competing for a conference title.
