This Saturday will mark the first annual "Jamming for Jax" benefit concert, a fundraiser hosted by the Jacquie Hirsch for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia Foundation in honor of former Geneseo student, Jacqueline Hirsch.
The concert will feature the Rochester-based band Friday in America, as well as special guests Dan Sheehan and Newspaper Joe. It will take place at Sully's Pub in Rochester from 2 to 7 p.m.
At the door guests pay a $20 entrance fee, which includes food, drinks and entertainment. In addition, there will be raffle tickets, T-shirts, wristbands and other merchandise for sale. All proceeds will go to the A.L.L. Foundation.
Founded in 2007 after Hirsch was diagnosed with A.L.L., the foundation "grew rapidly as an extension of Jacquie's energetic and altruistic personality," according to the foundation's Web site. "Finding ways to give back and help others, a plan was devised in order to confront leukemia and other obstacles associated with cancer."
"[Colleges Against Cancer] is always looking to help the fight against cancer, but there's even more motivation when it's so close to home," said sophomore Sarah Cantatore, CAC vice president.
Hirsch was a childhood education major at Geneseo who planned to graduate in December 2007. She died on Sept. 6, 2008. Last year's Relay for Life, an overnight event that raises money for the American Cancer Society, was dedicated, in part, to her memory.
"Events like Relay for Life and this benefit concert will keep Jacquie's memory alive and remind everyone that the fight against cancer is continuous," Cantatore said. "Even if you didn't know Jacquie, this is a great cause and everyone should try to attend and show their support."
