Field hockey falls to William Smith

The women's field hockey team lost their final game of the season on Saturday at William Smith College, 3-1 -- Geneseo's 12th consecutive loss against the college.

Despite the loss, head coach Jessica Seren said in an e-mail that she was proud of her team. "I don't think there is one thing we could have done differently to win the game on Saturday," she said. "Sometimes success isn't measured in wins and losses, and this game was a great example of that. Each one of them knew that the game had the potential to be their last of the season. They played hard, stuck together and had fun. That's what's great about this team."

The Knights trailed after the first half, 1-0, and William Smith added two more goals in the second. Freshman Chellie Johnson came off the bench to score the lone goal of the game for the Knights. It was Johnson's third goal of the season.

Seren also pointed out that despite the loss, the Knights played well on both sides of the ball, especially defensively. "It was by far the best game we have played on a turf surface this season," she said. "One of their goals was on a penalty stroke, so our defensive unit, as a whole, only gave up two goals. Prior to the game, our GAA [goals against average] against Liberty League turf teams was 4.5."

Seren added that last year the Herons scored four goals off of corners and that this time the Herons had 13 offensive corners but were unable the convert on any of them. According to Seren, this was due mainly to the strong play of their starting defensive unit..

Due to a small number of teams, there is no SUNYAC tournament for women's field hockey. Geneseo is, however, eligible for an at-large bid to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships on Nov. 11, 14 and 15. Seren said that the team will be notified on Nov. 9 if they have received a bid.
