Frugal Fashionista, a women's clothing consignment store on Main Street that offers students and residents secondhand designer clothing, celebrated its grand opening this past weekend.
"We are offering gently used, upscale resale apparel from new designer lines," said Spring Morrow, owner of the store.
The apparel, which Morrow described as "trendy and seasonal," will come from fashion lines such as BCBG, rue21 and Abercrombie & Fitch but will be sold at prices considerably lower than would be found at traditional retailers. Morrow said she hopes to attract penny-pinching students with prices ranging from $5 to $100.
The shop also welcomes potential consignors willing to part with their used clothes. Morrow requests that donated clothing be seasonal, smoke-free and on hangers.
"I will offer a 60-40 split with all students," Morrow said. "I will also give a 10 percent discount for all store items next year to any student who consigns with us by the end of this year. This is a great way for students to get extra pocket money, or get their own gifts."
Morrow said she is hoping to market to more than just the campus community, and that ideally her store will become a part of the village so that her business' chances for continued success are maximized.
"Once the college students leave, businesses in the area take a nosedive, so a balance has to be struck," Morrow said. She said she was hopeful that her store would be able to compete with larger retailers such as Wal-Mart and Peebles due to Frugal Fashionista's convenient location and business hours. During the holiday season, the store will be open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Frugal Fashionista will fill the space formerly occupied by PC Trend, which still exists as a small business operating out of the store's back room. Morrow said she was open to expanding the store if business is encouraging.
"I may have [the back room] become a men's section of the store," Morrow said.
Once the holiday season ends on Jan. 2, the store will open at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday and will close at 7 p.m. except for Thursdays, when it will remain open until 8 p.m., and Saturday when it will close at 6 p.m.
