Eco-House registration underway

The environmentally-focused Eco-House, situated within Putnam Hall, is now accepting applications online until Feb. 26 for residents interested in applying for the fall semester.

Although the guidelines will be developed by the residents themselves, a number of projects have already been proposed including a community garden, potluck dinners, composting, floor drying racks, car pools to Wegmans and Walmart, trips to other eco-houses in the area and sustainability initiatives.

Sophomore Tamar Massen, who is applying to live in the house and assisting in its development, said that Eco-House will probably model existing residential college houses Dante House and Writers House, featuring "house dinners with knowledgeable professors."

The entire hall will be devoted to the project and open to all students, with some rooms set aside for incoming freshmen and transfers. In total, the hall can house 80 residents.

According to Massen, the college is already taking steps toward becoming more self-sustaining and this project will perpetuate this spirit of sustainability. "It's time Geneseo had a house like this," she said.

Kevin Hahn, interim assistant director of residence life, also advocated the eco-friendly changes being made throughout campus. "With all these students with similar interests, we can really make some changes," he said.
