Film Review: Clash of the Titans an epic failure

Film ReviewClash of the Titans★½

For a film that should have been a Greek epic, Clash of the Titans failed epically to impress.

Action lovers looking for action and only action may leave slightly satisfied, but should expect nothing more. Those interested in a good script over cheap dialogue, a well-developed storyline and an accurate depiction of Greek mythology should steer clear of this film.

The movie, a remake of the 1981 film, captures the legendary war between man and the gods. Director Louis Leterrier, known for The Incredible Hulk (2008), follows the life of demi-god Perseus, played by Avatar's Sam Worthington, who didn't get much of an opportunity to prove his acting ability in the midst of all the fight sequences. Seeking revenge against the god of the underworld, Hades (Ralph Fiennes), for killing his adoptive family, Perseus must overcome some perilous obstacles to kill the mythical beast the Kraken and save Princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos) from being sacrificed.

Through all of his perils, Perseus tries to prove himself as a man by showing he doesn't need the help of the gods, especially his biological father, Zeus (Liam Neeson). Neeson and Fiennes, though portraying the powerful gods of ancient Greek myth, failed to add anything of spectacle to the movie, as their acting abilities are hindered by a poor script and not-so-special effects.

The fight scenes, consisting of mortal men battling these jumbled effects, leave the audience dizzy and annoyed from the quick, choppy camera movements. The film veered from mythology unnecessarily, which took away from the story.

All aspects of love and passion Perseus has for Andromeda in the ancient myths are replaced with revenge against the gods, leaving the viewers with little interest in the characters, and leading to only more battle scenes. The film was ephemerally entertaining, but consisted mostly of a series of events the audience knew were going to happen. The only surprises were those changes in the mythology.

With such a monotonous plot and a bland and sudden ending, it's certainly not a film to go rent when it comes out or see ever again. In a word: forgettable.
