Field hockey dominates, wins 14th straight

Different week, same story for the women's field hockey team as the Knights continue to pile on the victories. On Tuesday, Geneseo recorded its 14th consecutive win with the defeat of Ithaca College and improved its already stellar record to 15-1 overall.

The lone loss of the season came light-years ago to Hamilton College in the second week of the season. Since then, the Knights have outscored their opponents a collective 41 to eight, attaining seven shutouts along the way.

One of those shutouts came last Thursday against Elmira College as the Knights toyed with the Soaring Eagles, winning 4-0.

"I was happy with the way we played and how strong we came out against Elmira," head coach Jessica Seren said. "It's easy at this point in the season to let your guard down and we didn't do that."

Besides SUNY Cortland, a competitive team the Knights beat earlier this season, complacency could be the only major obstacle keeping the team from a SUNYAC championship and NCAA tournament bid.

"It's hard mentally to come out every game and continue to play at a high level," Seren said. "[Complacency] is always a concern that I have in the back of my head but my team always proves me wrong; it hasn't been an issue this season."

On Saturday, the Knights traveled to Hartwick College, a team with a sub-500 record that could have been overshadowed by six tough overtime losses. If there was ever a time for complacency to strike, it was then. Geneseo instead went on to win 3-1, paced by senior Michelle Milkovich who scored her 14th goal of the season.

"I think it was one of the best games we've played all season," Seren said. "We definitely controlled most of the game." The Knights dominated possession and play in the midfield, something Seren stressed as a key to their success.

On Tuesday, Milkovich continued to carry the team, handing out two assists and eclipsing her own school record in the process as the Knights beat the Ithaca Bombers, 4-1. "There hasn't been a team we've played yet this year that can stop her," Seren said of her star forward. "We go into every game and she's getting double teamed all over the field and it just hasn't been an issue, they can't stop her."

"I haven't had to adjust anything based on what other teams throw at her because she gets the job done," Seren said.

This weekend, the Knights travel to William Smith College for their last game of the regular season before they host SUNYAC play on Nov. 5.

"They refuse to settle for average," said Seren of her team. "They go in with the mindset every game that they aren't going to lose and they do whatever it takes to get the win."
