Junior Lee Berube, Knights impress at Cornell Relays

The indoor track and field teams opened their seasons at the Cornell University Relays over the weekend. The invitational featured numerous schools throughout the region from various divisions as well as unattached runners.

Eight individuals earned top ten all-time recognition for Geneseo history including junior Lee Berube, who won the 5,000-meter and participated in the distance medley relay.

Berube not only earned first place, he broke a school record and automatically qualified for the NCAA. His record-breaking time of 14 minutes, 23.89 seconds climbed to the top of the records, beating out 2010 graduate Tim Chichester's time of 14:32.84.

"[Berube] was running at a pace no other Geneseo runner has before," said head coach Dave Prevosti. Prevosti emphasized the difficulty of Berube's 5,000-meter run, stating that he had to maintain a focused mentality to keep pace with no competition ahead of him. "He's a very special athlete," Prevosti said. "There are no limits for what he's going to do this year."

The women also proved their abilities; three individuals earned top 10 all-time recognition for Geneseo history. Freshmen Victoria Kuberka and Carly Biondi led the Knights in the 60-meter hurdles with times of 10.00 seconds and 10.39, respectively. Freshman Samantha Hudson entered the Geneseo record books with an 8.64 finish in the 60-meter dash.

Prevosti was happy with the results, saying they were "exactly what [the teams] hoped for." The coaches were able to evaluate new runners and get others qualified for tournaments. Prevosti was even surprised by some of the runners because they were already running with mid-season intensity. "We're doing so well because people believe in each other, and are willing to compete and represent the school well," Prevosti said.

On Saturday, the Knights travel to Rochester Institute of Technology for their final meet of the semester.
