After upsetting No.10-ranked Carnegie Mellon the week before, it would have been easy for the Blue Wave to overlook SUNY Oswego on Saturday and potentially lose the momentum that has been building all season.
Fortunately, both the men and women were victorious. The men dominated in just about every event, winning 203-95, and the women won a slightly more competitive meet with a final score of 167-130.
The highlight of the meet for Geneseo was the success of the men's 200 freestyle relay. Sophomore Frank Schiappa led off the relay with a blistering time of 21.2 seconds, within a half-second of an NCAA automatic qualifying time. "It was exciting to see that the relay as a whole was as fast as we have been all year," coach Paul Dotterweich said.
Dotterweich himself celebrated his 100th career win on Sunday, improving his record with the Blue Wave to 100-7.
Geneseo had another strong showing on the boards with senior Wills DeMoulin winning both the one- and three-meter boards with scores of 296.1 and 309.25, respectively.
On the women's side, sophomore Elyssa Max had a successful meet, pulling a first place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.69 seconds. Senior Jennifer Anthone made substantial contributions, touching first in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
"At this time of the year it is all about attitude," Dotterweich said. "The student athletes have put in their time and hard work in order to be successful, and now it's really just a matter of adjusting your mental game and being 100 percent confident in yourself and your team going into the final meets of the season."
The Oswego meet marked Dotterweich's last chance to evaluate his swimmers and decide which athletes will be traveling to Erie Community College to compete in the SUNYAC championships next Thursday.
"There are some pretty good teams out there," Dotterweich said. "If we don't go in with the right attitude it is certainly not a given we will achieve our goal of first … you've just got to go play the game … I think we're in a really good place. We're going to be fast but I'm excited to see how we will perform."
Geneseo looks to continue its dominance in swimming and diving, attempting to capture the 13th consecutive SUNYAC Championship and its 18th in the past 22 years.
