Geneseo farmers market set to open in June

At a March 21 Geneseo Village Board meeting, Dave Bojanowski and Cate Concannon of the Farmers Market Committee received support to locate a market at the lower Center Street junction with Main Street.

The market will be open for 18 weeks from June through September on Thursdays, 4-7 p.m. Members of the Board had hoped that the market could be held on Saturdays, but Thursday turned out to be a more convenient time for most vendors.

The market will sell locally produced goods including fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, jams, honey, syrup and possibly wine. Ten vendors have been secured so far; over half of them are based out of Livingston County. Vendors will carry their own insurance and supply their own tents.

Bojanowski is hoping to have the street clear of vehicles by 3 p.m. on the days the market is open to provide vendors with an hour of setup time. Parking meters will be bagged beginning after 1:30 p.m. Regional Transit Service buses will stop at the market and detour through the village parking lot.

According to an informal survey conducted by the FMC, the majority of downtown merchants have welcomed the farmers market concept, especially those merchants located on or near Center Street.

Geneseo Mayor Richard Hatheway, who was present at the meeting, has expressed support for the farmers market.

"The group that put it together has worked very hard and the village government is very supportive," he said.

Also present at the meeting was sophomore Aaron Schwartz, a student representative of the FMC.

"Right now things are looking good, and we'll be working on calculating finances and how to properly advertise," Schwartz said.
