Livingston Cares to raise money with Gumbo dinner

On April 15, the semi-annual "Gumbo to Go" dinner will take place, thanks to both Geneseo students and Livingston County residents who make up Livingston Cares, an organization that aims to help others inside and outside of the community.

Livingston Cares has hosted "Gumbo to Go" for several years. According to senior Callie Eidler, Marketing Leadership and Service Programs intern, the dinners help to raise money for the group's humanitarian work, specifically its efforts to rebuild houses in Biloxi, Miss. and Livingston County. Over the 2011 spring break, Livingston Cares traveled to Mississippi to rebuild houses that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

A traditional meal of the south, Gumbo dinners coincide neatly with the rebuilding of homes in the Mississippi area.

The dinner will take place at the Central Presbyterian Church on the corner of Second and Center Street, well within walking distance from campus. Tickets for the dinner are on sale now and can be purchased at Key Bank on Main Street or at the College Union ticket office for $10.

Attendees are welcome to dine in the social hall of the church between 4-7 p.m., but they can also simply pick up their meals to go. Diners will receive praline cookies and cornbread in addition to their Gumbo, a spicy soup dish including meat and vegetables. A vegetarian option will be available.

Southside Boys will perform in the upstairs sanctuary of the church at 7:30 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $3 for the a capella performance. The members of Livingston Cares encourage donors to watch the performance; all proceeds will go toward the organization's humanitarian projects. Livingston Cares does a lot of important work for communities both near and far, so come out to support their cause, eat, and enjoy the entertainment that this southern-style meal has to offer.
