Women’s lacrosse continues dominance, defeats Oneonta

The Geneseo women's lacrosse team put in a dominating effort this past Saturday, pounding host SUNY Oneonta 17-10.

Freshman sensation Caroline Buonocore impressed with six goals, six groundballs and two draw controls to lead the attack for Geneseo.

"We needed to come out strong and continue to push and work, regardless of the score," said head coach Carly Ritchlin. And come out strong the team did. Buonocore's second tally of the match with only 13 seconds left in the half put the Knights ahead by 8-1 heading into intermission.

Weather was an issue early on for Geneseo, as high winds made it difficult for the Knights to get out in transition and get their fast break moving. "We made adjustments and were then able to go on the 8-1 run," Ritchlin said.

Coming out of halftime, Oneonta showed signs of life in netting three consecutive goals. The Red Dragons came within three of the lead, but that's as close as they would get to the taste of victory. The Knights stopped the run and responded with a four-goal run of their own that included two more goals from Buonocore.

Sophomore Lea Paris had a standout effort, recording three goals and remaining a force in the midfield throughout the game. Senior midfielder Anna Hutchings played a large role in the win, scoring two goals, gathering nine draw controls and scooping eight groundballs.

In the net, senior goalie Annie Smith had a solid game and recorded three saves.

Oneonta junior attacker Rebecca Monteith led the Red Dragons with six goals of her own, matching Buonocore on the game.

"At this point in the season we are in the best shape," Ritchlin said. "From day one of preseason we have pushed them physically so they are prepared to handle three games."

She also said that the team's great depth of talent allows her as coach to confidently send in replacement players to relieve the starters. This strategy helps keep legs fresh by giving breaks whenever needed.

"Overall this team has been working really hard, and they are committed to continuing the intensity all the way through. We are constantly teaching and working to improve our game each and every day, whether it is a game or practice, there are always teachable moments that allow us to continue to grow" Ritchlin said.

With the victory, the Knights rise to 9-1 overall and to 3-1 in the SUNYAC. Geneseo looks to improve its record this Friday and Saturday, hosting conference rivals Buffalo State and SUNY New Paltz, respectively.
