Tennis falls to Herons in final match

The Geneseo women's tennis team traveled to William Smith College for its final match of the season on Thursday; the Knights fell to the Herons, 6-3. The loss brought them to a record of 11-3 on the season. The win marks the sixth in a row for William Smith, and the Herons remain undefeated against Geneseo with a record of 11-0 all-time.

The Knights got off to a promising start against the Herons. Junior Monica Vieth dominated her opponent in first singles 6-0, 6-4 and freshman Lucy Mehrabyan won second singles 6-4, 6-4. "[Mehrabyan] had an overall terrific season and has been a big asset for the team," said junior captain Julia Passik.

Juniors Melissa Baker and Katie Gayvert struggled in their individual matches and lost 6-2, 6-2, and 7-5, 6-2, in fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Sophomore Katie Talbot battled for three sets in the sixth singles; she eventually lost 12-10 in the third set tiebreaker in a match that "could have definitely gone either way," Passik said.

Passik lost third singles in 2-6, 6-1, 1-6, but paired with Vieth to capture first doubles, 9-7. "Monica and I have great chemistry on the courts … this past match was a big win for us," Passik said.

But William Smith, which has only lost three doubles matches this month, cruised to victories of 8-4 and 8-5 in second and third doubles, respectively.

"They had a very strong team, but our team is really strong too," Passik said. "This time we didn't win, but I think another day on different courts we could have."

The team remains optimistic for next season. "I think we are going to have a really strong team next year. None of the girls this year are graduating so we can only get better," Passik said. "I'm very excited to see what next year will bring."
