Milne Library offers Digital Media Lab

The Digital Media Lab, located on the first floor of Milne Library, was created in August as a collaboration between the library and Computing & Information Technology.

At a cost of $33,000, the DML consists of two iMacs, three Dell computers, two HP Compaqs, a Hannspree TV with a DVD/VHS player for viewing final projects and a Digital Videocassette Recorder.

The idea for the project began in January 2011 when Cyril Oberlander, the new interim director of Milne Library, began his position at Geneseo.

By introducing technology in the form of digital media, Oberlander said he feels that both students and professors can use the creative outlet to learn in a new way.

"The world is so darn interesting … you just need the training," he said. He stated that students need to have the ability to see their creative potential.

The team for the project consisted of Laura Cook, head manager of the project; Sue Chichester, chief information officer and director of CIT; and Joe Dolce, Steve Dresbach and Steve Prano – technology instructors in the lab.

The DML contains some unique software, including Camtasia, a screen casting program, and Final Cut Pro, a high-end video-editing software.

Dolce, Dresbach and Prano are available for classroom instruction upon a professor's request and one-on-one consultations with students.

Everyone on board with the project anticipates the DML to be successful and even expand in years to come. The lab is already beginning to expand; Meeting Room 214B is soon to become a mini recording studio for student projects.

"I think [the DML] is going to be a great resource for students who are serious about manipulating any digital media," Dolce said. "We are very excited about working [with the students]."
