The Geneseo women's tennis team remains undefeated on the season, having won its last two matches, defeating both SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Oneonta, 9-0.
Geneseo beat defending SUNYAC champion New Paltz on Sept. 16 in a heated matchup. In each of the last five years, Geneseo and New Paltz have combined to finish either first or second in the conference.
In the first doubles match, seniors Monica Vieth and Julia Passik trailed early, 3-6, before winning the final five points to take the match, 8-6.
"Getting that win really meant a lot for everyone," Passik said. "It was helpful to have the whole team supporting us."
"They are seniors who have the experience to recognize when some things need to be changed," said head coach Jim Chen. "It was a really significant team win."
Geneseo won the other two doubles matches as freshmen Shiho and Kaho Sato won second doubles, 8-5, and seniors Reggie Connelly and Lauren Johnson took third doubles, 8-2.
The Knights claimed all six singles matches. Vieth won first singles, while freshmen Dexuan Yuan and Shiho Sato, junior Katie Talbot, freshman Amanda Rosati and junior Sarah Shields, took second through sixth singles, respectively. Vieth and Yuan won in third set tiebreakers while the rest of the singles were won in straight sets.
Geneseo played Oneonta on Sept. 17 and came away with another 9-0 victory. Vieth and Passik teamed up to win first doubles, with each prevailing in first and second singles, respectively.
The Sato sisters took second doubles and Connelly and Johnson teamed up again to take third doubles.
Shiho Sato won third singles and Talbot won at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1.
"[Talbot] is like a wall; nothing gets by her. She runs everything down," Chen said.
Rosati and Shields took fifth and sixth singles for the second consecutive day. All six singles matches were won in straight sets against Oneonta.
Geneseo used nine different players in its match against New Paltz and 10 against Oneonta, emphasizing the depth of the team.
"It's a little bit of a luxury because of the depth we have," Chen said. "We have specialists in doubles and specialists in singles."
Geneseo is 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in SUNYAC West play. They compete again in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships Sept. 24 – 26 at William Smith College.
