Blue Wave sinks SUNY Fredonia

In their first league meet of the season, the Geneseo Blue Wave traveled to SUNY Fredonia, with the women's team prevailing 168-12 and the men's team winning as well, 195-99. The combined victories give the women a 2-0 record and bring the men up to 1-1.

With a much-improved women's team from years past, Fredonia provided some great races for Geneseo. Sophomore Lily Powell led the way for Geneseo, winning the 200 butterfly in 2 minutes, 11.94 seconds, the 500 free in 5:26.80, and the 400 individual in 4:55.43. Her first place finishes were even more impressive because all three of the events were consecutive.

"Lily Powell really had an outstanding meet for us. Her 2:11in the 200 fly this weekend is top 20 in the country right now, which is really exciting," said head coach Paul Dotterweich. "We really challenged [Powell] and she stepped up to the plate and got it done for us."

Freshman Abby Max, with a new, more aggressive approach, dropped one second off her 200 free time to win in 1:59.31. Max also placed first in the 200 back in 2:15.03.

The Fredonia divers did their part as they scored every point possible, placing first, second and third on both the one and three meter boards.

On the men's side, first year John Nasky set a pool record in the mile event with a time of 16:52.12, which is within the top 10 in the country. This was the first time the standout freshman has ever swam this event.

This was also the first time this season that Geneseo competed in the 200 stroke events.

"For the new athletes it gave us a chance to evaluate them in these events, and we saw some really good stuff," added Dotterweich.

In addition to Nasky, freshman Kenny Athans won the 100 breast in 1:03.64 and the 400 individual medley in 4:19.32.

"The freshmen guys are really creating an energy on the team … They're opening some eyes, that's for sure," stated Dotterweich. "They're going to do some great things for us if they keep working as hard as they have been working."

On Saturday Nov. 12, Geneseo heads east to face SUNY Cortland.
