It's that time of the year again: rush week! With classes and your other commitments it might be hard to keep all the different Greek events in order.
Rushing can sometimes be overwhelming, but it can also be an incredibly fun experience. When I began rushing, I fell in love with the Greek community at Geneseo, but I wish that I had a guide to tell me what to expect and how to get the most out of the week.
As a transfer student with no Greek life experience, I didn't know what to expect. Here are a few things I would advise any student interested in becoming a part of the best decision I've ever made: going Greek!
1. Ask questions.
Don't be afraid to ask the important questions. Once you get passed the initial awkward questions of "Where are you from?" and "What's your major?" try to get to know more about that organization. Ask questions like, why they joined, how many people are in the organization, what they do for fun and how much of a time commitment it is. You never know unless you ask, and the more you know the better decision you can make on where you best fit in.
2. Prioritize.
It will seem like there a million events going on at once and on top of tests and papers it will be hard to spread out your time successfully. Try to go to the events in which you're most interested and where you feel the most comfortable.
3. Be Friendly.
This one is probably a bit obvious but it's one of the most important tips I can give. Go up to others, introduce yourself and strike up a conversation. Don't be concerned if you feel awkward. They want to meet you. Go up to as many people as you can and even make plans to grab lunch or coffee.
4. Go with your gut.
I rushed with a few of my friends and eventually we all split up and went with the organizations we personally preferred. Don't feel pressured to join where your friends join and remember that you have to do what's right for you.
5. Have fun!
Rush week is supposed to be a fun time where you get to meet new people and experience new things. Don't stress about which events to attend and what you're going to say. Go to as many events as you can and meet as many people as possible. The Greek community wants you to enjoy yourself and they want to welcome you with open arms!
