Blue Wave looks for NCAA qualifiers

On Saturday Feb. 18, the Geneseo Blue Wave traveled to Ithaca to compete with the host and SUNY Oneonta in their final swim as a team this season. Although lacking official scoring for the teams, NCAA provisional, pool and personal record times were still up for grabs.

Geneseo was able to lower some of the relay times that were close to the NCAA provisional cut, but head coach Paul Dotterweich said he feels that the times will be just short of making it. The women's 400 free relay came the closest to qualifying, but touched just a 10th of a second shy.

"We had some nice swims this weekend. The athletes that didn't get to go to SUNYACs [the week prior] swam really well," Dotterweich said. "They all hit personal best times. In addition, I think we had seven other people hit personal best times in at least one event."

Reflecting on the season, Dotterweich highlighted the yearlong performance of freshman Katie Jesaitis.

"She dropped significant time in every event and placed in the final of all her events at [SUNYAC] Championships," Dotterweich said.

For those who qualified, next up is the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. on Wednesday March 28. Geneseo looks to send freshman John Nasky for the 1650, sophomore diver Brandon Peifer, freshman Abby Max for the 200 free, 500 free and the 200 backstroke, and first year Haley Wixson for the 100 backstroke. The women's 400 free and 400 medley relay teams will also represent Geneseo at nationals.
