On Saturday April 7, the Geneseo women’s softball team traveled to SUNY Brockport and split the conference games, winning the first 11-9 and losing the second 9-1.
In the first game, senior Carolyn “KK” Schaus set the tone for the offense with a homerun in the first inning.
“It was a good shot, [a] way to get us going,” said head coach Tony Ciccarello.
In the top of the sixth, the Knights’ bats came alive, and the team earned a total of five runs.
“People came through when we really needed them to come through, and that’s what we’ve been preaching all year,” Ciccarello said. “[Brockport] made a couple of errors – that helped us along.”
Junior Stef Rosenberg also led the offense, going 2-4 with two doubles and four RBIs.
On the mound, junior Katie Gallagher claimed the save with two strikeouts in the seventh.
“That was huge for [Gallagher’s] confidence … [It was] a great way to close it with two strikeouts,” Ciccarello said.
In the second game, the Knights did not carry over the success and fell in six innings, 9-1.
Junior Lexi Williams highlighted the offense by going 3-3, including a solo homerun in the second inning.
According to coach Ciccarello, “it was a shot,” but it did not spark the offense for the Knights.
“We just struggled to get the hits,” Ciccarello said. “We were leaving runners on … Last year we lit [Brockport pitcher Erin Fleming] up.”
The Knights also struggled on defense.
“We did not take care of the ball, either. We made a couple of errors that were huge,” Ciccarello said.
Geneseo falls to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in SUNYAC. Despite the string of losses, coach Ciccarello said he is still happy with the team’s mentality.
“They come to work every day and they work to improve. The energy was there,” Ciccarello said. “They’re still backing up each other.”
“It’s tough when you’re not getting the [wins],” he said. “They’re staying together and I’m really proud of them for that.”
The Knights travel to SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY Potsdam on April 13 and 14, respectively.
