Equestrian battles top competition in third home show

The Geneseo equestrian team hosted its third show of the season at Rolelu Stables, Inc. on Nov. 3.

“The show was very successful in how it ran,” head coach Kim Sanford said. “I was very pleased with the level of competition the girls brought today.”

Not only were the Knights successful in the way they rode, they were also able to raise awareness for breast cancer, as many of the riders wore pink ribbons on their bridles.

The riders also orchestrated a successful food drive in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

In accordance with Faculty Recognition Day, the team celebrated the faculty recognition ceremony at the show, where each graduating senior recognized a professor who influenced her academic and personal growth throughout her Geneseo career.

Geneseo finished fifth of 10 teams in the show, marking the third straight performance in which the team has placed in the top five. In the first and second show, the team finished fifth and third, respectively.

A week after she was named Geneseo athlete of the week, sophomore Emily Lockard continued her early success, placing third in novice over the fences. Lockard earned 10 points for her team as a point rider, which aided the team in closing out another top finish.

Senior Emily Oswald was the sole Geneseo rider to win her class, finishing first in novice on the flat.

“[Winning] was the perfect way to end my final home show with the team,” Oswald said.

Another notable performance included junior Clarisse Birkby’s third-place finish in the walk/trot division.

After three shows Geneseo is one of the top-contending teams in Zone 2 Region 2, and the women’s team is aiming to keep pace with perennial contending rivals, St. Lawrence University and defending champion Cazenovia College.

Geneseo takes a week off before facing its rivals on Nov. 17 at St. Lawrence and on Nov. 18 at Cazenovia.
