The nationally ranked Geneseo Blue Wave men's and women's swimming and diving teams doubled up on SUNY Oswego on Saturday Jan. 26, winning 146-139 and 158-114, respectively.
Although both teams posted victories, head coach Paul Dotterweich said that neither team turned in a dominant performance.
“To be honest, we swam against two pretty average teams this weekend and did not perform as well as we have in past meets,” Dotterweich said.
This was in part due to issues with the pool leading up to the week of the meet; Dotterweich acknowledged that his teams did “pretty good, considering the circumstances.”
Leading the way for the No. 22-ranked men's team was junior Brandon Peifer who swept the diving events, scoring 246.85 on the one-meter board and 283.4 in the three-meter competition, en route to his sixth straight first-place finish on the season. For his efforts Peifer was named the SUNYAC Men's Diver of the Week.
The men's 400-yard medley team turned in a strong performance buoyed by the efforts of standout freshmen Kristian Tialios and Yonghoon Jun, junior Paul Jennings and senior Frank Schiappa, posting a winning time of 3 minutes, 41.19 seconds.
The two key freshmen Tialios and Jun additionally posted victories in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly, with times of 22.37 and 2:05.84, respectively.
Five of the men's ten first-place finishes came from first-years, which has been a recurring theme for the Blue Wave this season following the graduation of eight seniors.
“The freshman class has really stepped up and performed admirably for [the men's team] this year,” Dotterweich said. “It's very rare that you see so many freshmen come in and perform at such a high level right away.”
For the No. 25-ranked women's team, junior Emily Wanamaker stretched her winning streak to seven consecutive weeks after winning the one-meter and three-meter diving events with scores of 224.5 and 235.75, respectively.
The 400-yard medley relay team comprised of sophomores Haleigh Wixson and Eileen Goralski as well as juniors Lily Powell and Linda Chang finished first for the Blue Wave with a time of 4:16:40.
Wixson also notched a victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.32.
Both teams look to add to their late season successes against Buffalo State College on Saturday Feb. 2 at the University of Buffalo.
