The women’s basketball team won both games on Friday Jan. 25 and Saturday Jan. 26 while dropping a game against SUNY Oswego on Tuesday Jan. 29.
The Knights opened the weekend against SUNY New Paltz with a convincing 73-43 win. While the score suggests a blowout win for the Knights, the game was a tale of two halves. Going into the half, both sides had 29 points with the Knights shooting 25 percent from beyond the arc.
Head coach Scott Hemer cited less than 100 percent mental commitment for the unsatisfactory performance in the first half.
The Knights responded with a 20-3 run in the beginning of the second half.
Senior guard Melissa Graham recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career high 15 rebounds. Sophomore forward Shannon McGinnis also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
On Saturday Jan. 26, Geneseo hosted SUNY Oneonta. Despite starting the half down by five points, the Knights were able to squeeze past the Red Dragons to a 57-51 win.
With roughly 30 seconds left, Oneonta, down by two, had the opportunity to tie the game or take the lead, but Graham blocked the team’s late 3-point shot attempt. This brought her within one block of tying the school record of 106 career blocks.
McGinnis, Graham and freshman forward Allison McKenna dominated the Knights and despite the amount of minutes they played, Hemer said that the team’s greatest advantage was their depth.
“I think that’s our greatest strength at this point,” Hemer said. “That’s what makes this group good and that is what will make this group special.”
The Knights’ five-game win streak came to a halt on Tuesday Jan. 29 when they fell to Oswego, 59-54. Just like the previous two games, the Knights went into the half without a lead and they saw themselves down by 10 points.
Despite being down, the Knights surged in the second half and, at one point, pulled a one-point lead with 46 seconds left. The lead was short lived as Oswego senior forward Meagan Stover made a layup to seal the win.
The Knights will try to bounce back at home against SUNY Brockport on Saturday Feb. 2.
