Indoor scatters wins in first scoring meet at SUNY Brockport

The Geneseo men’s and women’s indoor track teams traveled to SUNY Brockport on Feb. 2 to compete in the Brockport Invitational. The first scoring meet of the season, the women came in third out of 13 teams with 118 points, while the men placed sixth out of 13 teams with 51 points.

The most impressive performance of the day on the women’s side was in the 3,000-meter run, where Geneseo captured the top five spots. Senior Danae Polsin, sophomores Keira Wood, Cassie Goodman and Joanna Castrogivanni and freshman Shannon Murphy placed first through fifth, respectively, and sophomore Alyssa Knott finished in eighth. The Knights also made their mark on the one-mile run, with juniors Mary Aldridge and Lauren McKnight and senior Brigid Heenan picking up first place, third place and fourth place, respectively.

“I think [Aldridge] is quietly having an amazing season,” head coach Dave Prevosti said, noting her finish of 5 minutes, 10 seconds.

Freshman Ellie Trelstad rounded out the women’s results with a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run.

In the middle distance races, juniors Hannah Hughes and Towi Kuberka and freshman Kylie Ryan ran to sixth, seventh and eighth place honors in the 400-meter dash, and senior Cailin Kowalewski and graduate student Alyssa Smith came in second and fifth, respectively, in the 800-meter run.

Senior sprinter Diahann Cuevo placed eighth in the 200-meter dash, junior hurdler Allison Hoh was the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles and sophomore Elyssa Slawinski finished in seventh place in the weight throw. Senior Jessica Shumway and junior Carrie Levinn tied for second in the high jump.

The men’s squad likewise found most of their success in the distance races. In the 3,000-meter run, seniors Alex Brimstein and Chris Mateer placed first and second while leading a cohort of Knights that included nine top-20 finishes. Sophomore Cohen Miles-Rath took eighth, and freshman Brendan Wortner and senior Tim Chambers placed tenth and eleventh, respectively. In the one-mile run, Brimstein finished in fourth place, followed by sophomores Billy Gabriel and Chaz Abad in fifth and seventh place, respectively.

Senior Joseph Biscardi came in ninth in pole vault, junior Anthony George took eighth in the 800-meter run, freshman Aidan Fullerton earned seventh place in the heptathlon and senior Brendan Murphy claimed fifth in the weight throw.

“It was great to see Murphy beat all but one Brockport thrower,” Prevosti said, alluding to the strength of the Golden Eagle throwers.

The Knights will travel east on Feb. 9, splitting their squad to participate in meets at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tufts University.u
