Women’s lacrosse on four-game streak

The Geneseo women’s lacrosse team earned two more decisive victories in its past two away games on April 11 and Saturday April 12. The Knights found themselves in a difficult situation during the first leg of the weekend against St. Lawrence University. With 23 minutes and 19 seconds to play in regulation, the game was tied at 4-4.

Then, at the 15:15 mark, the Knights went on a run that saw four unanswered goals to take the lead, 8-4. Though St. Lawrence responded with two goals of its own, Geneseo put the game away with a 3-1 run in the final 8:30 to seal their ninth win of the regular season.

Sophomore attack Tara Basile led the Knights, scoring a career-high four goals to go along with an assist in the 11-7 win.

Senior midfielder Emily Haggerty and senior attack Caroline Buonocore totaled two goals and two assists apiece, while junior attack Katey Hart added two goals and one assist for Geneseo.

On Saturday, the Knights were back at it as they traveled to face a fellow SUNYAC team, SUNY Potsdam. Senior attack Meredith Weber kicked off a three-goal Geneseo run just over three minutes into the game against Potsdam.

The Bears responded with a pair of goals 28 seconds apart to make it a 3-2 game at 25:38. That’s as close as they would come for the rest of the day.

A 6-1 run aided in the 19-9 dominance against Potsdam. It also is the third double-digit victory for the Knights this season.

Haggerty totaled seven points on six goals and an assist to lead the No. 9 Knights. Buonocore added two goals and two assists while Weber scored three goals to lead Geneseo to its third victory in four days.

With only five games left in the regular season, head coach Carly Ritchlin was very pleased with her team’s performance on both ends of the field.

“I think our offense and our defense are both working really hard,” Ritchlin said. “We are going to continue to get stronger regarding all aspects of the game. We work every day in practice to get better at the little things, because the little things make the big difference in a win or loss.”
