The Geneseo men’s lacrosse team started to get back on track this week with a win on Tuesday April 14 over SUNY Oneonta, breaking their seven game losing streak and moving their record to 5-7. The team beat the Red Dragons 12-7 at home for their first SUNYAC win and their first victory in over a month.
Oneonta came into the game with a 5-5 record and was slated to be a daunting opponent for the Knights. But, with a beautiful spring afternoon in Livingston County, Geneseo seemed destined to win.
With a home crowd behind them for the second time this season, the atmosphere around the game would’ve been enough to push them toward the win, but the Knights’ determination was what really put them over the hump.
Although Geneseo had a narrow 5-4 lead at halftime, the second half was a different game. Geneseo outscored Oneonta 7-3 in the final two periods and had the game completely in control by the time the final period rolled around.
With a convincing victory now under their belts, the Knights get a week off to recuperate from a busy period in their schedule before getting back into the action with a game on Wednesday April 22 against SUNY Brockport at home. That contest will be particularly hard for the Knights—it will be their second to last game of the season.
Time is running out for Geneseo to sneak into the SUNYAC Tournament. The Knights still have a chance, sitting at 1-3 with two SUNYAC games left on their schedule. They’ll need some help to get in, however, which is never an ideal situation, but it is a situation of their own making.
Now that the season is winding down, the Geneseo men’s lacrosse team has to keep its eyes on the prize. The team put themselves into a sticky situation—having lost seven games in a row—but the Knights’ season isn’t over yet. All they have to do is keep moving forward with the kind of effort that they put out on Tuesday April 14. If they can do that, they should be able to keep the season going on to the playoffs.
