Tennis heads into SUNYAC Tournament undefeated

Coming off of a dominating win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Geneseo tennis team is looking forward to the weekend of Friday Oct. 9 when they will try and capture their fifth straight SUNYAC Championship. Led once again by seniors Cat Crummey and Marylen Santos, the Knights were able to secure an 8-1 victory over RPI.

Even though the Knights won against RPI and SUNY Cortland on Friday Oct. 2, they are not going to have a chance to rest. Going into the SUNYAC Tournament on Friday Oct. 9, the Knights are going to have a big target on their backs.

This is nothing, however, that the team hasn’t been able to handle. They have put up great numbers in each tournament that they’ve entered this year. The Knights have had players come in the top five of their section—doubles or singles—in all three of the tournaments that they have participated in. That kind of track record leads one to believe that this team will definitely have a strong chance of coming out on top in the SUNYAC Tournament.

The team has had outstanding doubles play all season long, with their doubles teams ending the season with a solid record. That type of consistency is amazing. The women used that stability to help their singles lineup cruise to impressive records.

From Friday Oct. 9–Sunday Oct. 11, the Knights will begin their title defense against SUNY Plattsburgh at the SUNYAC Tournament hosted at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Understandably, the women seem to have all the confidence in the world—they have been the best team in the conference all season long—that doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon.

Even though the Knights haven’t faced Plattsburgh yet this season, if their performance against the rest of the teams in the SUNYAC is any indication, then they will have a relatively easy time against the Cardinals. The women have only lost one match against their opponents—that being against RPI—and they were dominant against all their SUNYAC foes.

As we head into the final weekend of the fall season for the Geneseo women’s tennis team, the ball is in their court. If they choose to, they can absolutely wipe the floor with all of their competition.

Being able to beat all of their competitors is something that has been drilled into their heads for the past few seasons by their coaches—winning is preached daily. They can beat anyone on any day. That type of mentality is something that the Knights can use to carry them to victory.
