Junior midfielder Madison Albrecht is a multifaceted student here at Geneseo. Unlike many of Geneseo’s varsity athletes, Albrecht plays two sports: varsity field hockey and women’s club ice hockey. In addition to her busy athletic schedule, Albrecht finds the time to maintain her academics as a biology major and psychology minor.
Native of Delmar, N.Y., Albrecht is an alumna of Bethlehem High School. She began playing field hockey during her sophomore year of high school after her friends suggested that she try out, and Albrecht decided to go for it. Now in her third year at Geneseo, she has become an important part of the field hockey program.
“Geneseo has definitely helped me learn how to navigate the balance between school and sports,” Albrecht said.
She started 12 of her 14 games playing midfield during the 2016 season, proving how valuable she is to the team. This year, she hopes for more of the same.
When she’s not playing field hockey, Albrecht is playing center for the women’s ice hockey club team. She played hockey for the Troy Albany Ice Cats for many years prior to Geneseo. Her interest in ice hockey came in large part from her dad.
“It’s one of his favorite pastimes,” Albrecht said.
Albrecht chose Geneseo not only for the opportunity to play sports; she also selected Geneseo for its great academics. She was impressed with the strong biology program the school has to offer.
“It just worked out very well,” she said. “The fact that it’s a SUNY was very attractive.”
Since coming to Geneseo, some of her favorite pastimes on campus includes studying with her friends in Bailey Hall and just spending time with her friends in general. Albrecht is working on perfecting her headstand, and has an opinion on Taylor Swift’s new music.
“I used to be a big Taylor Swift fan, but she’s high-key disappointed me with this last song,” she said.
When not on campus, she loves spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys a variety of athletic activities, such as going on bike rides with her family, skiing and hiking. Albrecht fills her time with adventure, demonstrating her natural athleticism.
“My friend from high school and I are working on the 46 peaks in the Adirondacks,” she said.
Her grandfather lives close to the peaks, which helps her on this quest.
Although Albrecht doesn’t exactly know what she wants to do with her degree, she is interested in going to a physician’s assistant school and in teaching high school biology.
“I want to go to a city like Boston,” she said. “I’m excited to find a place to settle down—not for my life, but career wise.”
Though Albrecht is unsure about continuing to play field hockey or ice hockey, she would like to coach if she becomes a high school teacher.
“Having [field hockey] in my back pocket is a plus,” she said.
