Worried about landing a job after graduation or desperately searching for internships to fill the experience requirements of your major? Consider attending the Job and Internship Fair coming up in March.
Geneseo’s Department of Career Development will be hosting their fifth annual Job and Internship fair on March 21 from 1-3:30 p.m. in the Kuhl Gymnasium.
This event has been a hit in the past with nearly 500 students attending last year—and this year the department is striving to have even more students attend.
The fair consists of around 70 employers who will have positions available for paid and unpaid internships, as well as full-time postgraduate positions. The employers who will be in attendance come from all over New York State—including Long Island, New York City, the upper North East and more. Some companies from other states—like Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Delaware—will also be there.
“At our event, unlike other campuses, we only invite organizations looking for professional internships and professional postgraduate opportunities. You are not going to see part-time jobs there. This is a very focused event,” Associate Director for Internship Opportunities Rob DiCarlo said. “I think it is a really great opportunity for all of our academic majors. It is going to be a great chance for them to source internships, professional jobs after graduation.”
The representatives from the Department of Career Development explained that there will be employment opportunities for every major and discipline on-campus at the fair. They emphasized that the event is for all undergraduate students who are interested in landing internships, jobs or even just networking.
“We recommend all students to attend this event. It is really important for juniors and seniors, specifically, to attend this event if they are looking for full time positions after graduation,” Career Advisor Anna Grace Kelly said. “However, we always welcome freshmen and sophomores to come as well, as these positions are also open for them.”
Kelly gave some helpful tips for students to prepare for this upcoming event. She recommends that students arrive in professional business attire, as it is a professional event. Also, she advises that students bring updated resumes with them to give to the employers.
The Department of Career Development has drop-in hours every weekday, where students can schedule a 15-minute appointment to go over their resumes, cover letters and internship searches.
Kelly also discussed the importance of knowing ahead of time which companies students want to speak with at the event and what questions they plan to ask those employers.
The Department of Career Development will also be bringing back their career fair app that all students can download for free. It contains information about what companies will be at the event, what positions they have available, whether internships are paid or unpaid, the representatives’ titles and links to the companies’ websites. The app also provides a floor plan of the event so that students will know exactly where to find the employers who they want to meet.
Additionally, the Department of Career is promoting their Encore Closet at the event, which provides professional business clothing to students who do not have their own. The clothing can be rented at no cost for up to five days. In addition, the Department of Career Development will have a professional photo booth at the event for students to get their headshots taken, if needed.
“In the Department of Career Development, our goal is to help you land your dream job and to help you find success—whether in an internship or a full-time position,” Kelly said. “This is our fifth job fair, so we are really looking to make this the biggest and the best.”
