Audiences sure to "like" MTC's inventive revue of Broadway songs

On Thursday Dec. 2, the Musical Theater Club will open its Fall 2010 revue “MTC Likes This!” to what will surely be a packed audience.

The lineup includes songs from musicals including “Grease,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Hair,” “Legally Blonde,” “In The Heights” and “American Idiot.” This two-night event is not to be missed. For those students who are pinching pennies as we near the end of the semester, don’t fret: it’s free – hooray for mandatory student activity fees!

Early in the program, MTC performs Green Day’s “21 Guns” from the Broadway musical “American Idiot.” On stage, the ensemble is pitch-perfect and visually stunning, resulting in a performance that is sure to leave audience members with goose bumps.

Later on, six MTC members perform “Over the Rainbow,” the classic song made famous by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz. Under the direction of sophomore Jonathan Mushock and MTC Vice President and senior Lauren Alaimo, this often tired and overdone song is revamped with beautiful harmonies and choreography.

The second act starts off with a high-energy interpretation of “Omigod You Guys” from “Legally Blonde.” The skit that follows has definite political undertones, perhaps regarding certain decisions recently made by the college, but I don’t want to give away the surprise.

Next, be prepared to see your favorite MTC boys getting down and dirty to “Let It Go” from “The Full Monty” – and c’mon, who wouldn’t want to see some of Geneseo’s finest male specimens shimmy while scantily clad. Sophomore Josh Horowitz said that while this was the most challenging song for him to perform as a “new kid” still learning to be comfortable on stage, it’s his favorite because, “It’s one of those things that people will love to watch.”

The show ends with bang: a full-ensemble performance of “We Go Together” from “Grease.”

This semester’s MTC revue will not disappoint with its huge collection of new talent performing an impressive 35 songs and skits. Considering the reputation this club has built over the years, it’s not necessary to convince anyone to go see the show, but even those who are not fans of musical theatre will appreciate the tight-knit family these students have formed.

Freshman Elyssa Ramirez said, “I can’t imagine spending my first semester in college doing anything else but MTC in my free time.”

To all MTC kids: break a leg!
